Local breeders recognized in group's spring report

Several local Angus breeders were recently recognized in the 2004 Spring Sire Evaluation Report published by the American Angus Association. Among the local breeders recognized were Mike Kasten of Millersville, Power Play Associates, PS High Pockets Association and Paul Meier, all of Jackson.

The report is issued in both the spring and fall and includes the latest performance information on the sires so breeders can make accurate selection for improving their herds.

Area nursing care center earns award

Heartland Care and Rehab Center in Cape Girardeau was recently awarded a Best Practice Award from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

The center was recognized for its visits to area schools to talk with students about traumatic brain injuries. The students are able to visit with a person who has suffered such an injury and see how their lives have been affected.

The care center will present a presentation on its award-winning program March 9 at the state's Show Me Summit on Aging at Lake of the Ozarks.

Business counseling sessions available

Counseling sessions for small-business owners will be held Thursday and again Feb. 17 to 19 around Southeast Missouri.

The sessions will be led by Gil Degenhardt and are free. Each session lasts about an hour. The sessions are offered by the Small Business Development Center of Southeast Missouri State University.

Counseling sessions will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Malden City Hall. Sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce; from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission in Perryville.

Carrington House to close Cape Girardeau location

Carrington House Factory Direct Furniture is closing its Cape Girardeau location. The firm operates a store in Carterville, Ill., also. Inventory at the store has been reduced to accommodate the closing.
