LETTERS: PASS A LAW, LOOK FOR THE LOOPHOLE

To the editor:

An employee of a customs office in another land one day dropped and damaged my typewriter. I was a bit annoyed and said that I would hold him responsible under the law for ruining or destroying my typewriter. He simply responded, "What difference does the law mean to me?" He seemed unconcerned.

"Pass a law, find the loophole" is a temptation in many cultures. Some people deem it necessary to challenge the speed limits. Others find ways to outwit the IRS. Some seem to spend more time looking for loopholes than they do in complying with the law.

It seems to be human nature to look for an easier solution, even if it means bending the rules or actual distortion or deceit. That doesn't mean that one must buck his head against a wall just to see which is harder.

Actually, laws give guidance and protection in a society. Human behavior seems to require guidelines to guarantee to all the rights and freedoms we all enjoy.

Still, we must be realistic and honest in facing up to life's challenges and duties. One must use good judgment in meeting life's demands as well as in taking advantage of its opportunities for progress and growth.

Progress is made and success is achieved by those who can still find easier ways of reaching the same well-deserved goals in life and yet are law-abiding.
