A Cape Girardeau woman has earned an exceptional honor. Laurel Adkisson was recently chosen on of the 1996 10 Outstanding Young Missourians by the state Jaycees.

Adkisson works a financial services officer with Commerce Bank. She was nominated by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

Adkisson gives considerable time and talent to the region. She has volunteered countless hours to the American Legion, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. She has also been active in March of Dimes, Zonta Club, the Area Wide United Way and the Riverfest Association.

In 1991, she developed the Holiday of Lights decorations contest and bus tour, which has become a real favorite of local residents. She also worked to develop the River Heritage Calendar of Events to highlight regional tourism.

The 10 Outstanding Young Missourians award is based on achievement in the areas of personal improvement, financial success, social improvements, philanthropic contributions or voluntary service, political or government service, scientific contributions, legal reform, cultural improvements and leadership accomplishments.

The honor reflects well on Adkisson and the high caliber of membership in the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.
