Islamic Center opens doors to community

When it comes to religion in these parts, Christianity by far is the faith of choice. Church growth here is evident as large worship centers go up. In a time when overall attendance for most Christian denominations is sinking, it is good to see vibrant churches in our midst.

But there are other groups that play an important role in our community by serving the spiritual needs of those who, for a variety of reasons, follow other paths to religious enlightenment. One of those groups is inviting the community to visit and learn more about Islam, a worldwide faith that has been much in the news of late.

The Islamic Center of Cape Girardeau at 298 West End Blvd. is having an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Islamic beliefs and the role Muslims play in American society will be discussed. Books and food from around the Islamic world will be available.

This is an opportunity for many of us to learn more about our neighbors and their religious practices. The Islamic Center is to be commended for making the effort to foster understanding.
