DAV IS AGAINST MEMORIAL MOVE

To the editor:

At its regularly scheduled meeting July 25, the membership of Cape Girardeau County Chapter 16 of the Disabled American Veterans voted unanimously to make a public declaration regarding the veterans memorial in County Park North.

It is the position of Chapter 16's membership that the proposed Conservation Department nature center not be built in the proximity of the veterans memorial. By proximity we mean anywhere that overshadows, intrudes or detracts from the memorial. Further, the memorial should remain in place and not be relocated to an inferior location. The memorial is the park's crown jewel and perfectly situated where it is. It should not be considered as a minor obstruction to the Conservation Department.

We believe the nature center can and should be built near the Conservation Department's existing regional office or somewhere on the department's newly acquired 50 acres adjoining the park.
