Local districts hold annual fundraisers

If you're involved with area schools, you may have noticed your calendar is full this time of year.

Adding to this mix are two local districts foundations' largest annual fundraisers. Jackson's Red and Black Affair was held Jan. 30, and the Cape Girardeau School District's Penguin Party was held Saturday.

This year's Penguin Party, held at Ray's Banqet Center, offered attendees a chance to own a piece of Central history. Several items from the old Central gym, being razed to make way for administrative offices, were up for bid at auction. People could bid on items such as sections of the gym floor, the scoreboard and pieces of railing.

A painting -- created live at the event -- by Rosetta Whitten was auctioned for $1,000.

The Red and Black Affair was one of the first events to take place at the new Jackson Civic Center.

A record 530 people attended the event. Auction items in Jackson included a canvas tepee customized by Orchard Drive Elementary School students.

Strong schools make for strong communities. It's important to support public school districts, whose teachers are educating future generations of community leaders, volunteers and professionals.

Thanks to all who came out to the Red and Black Affair and Penguin Party. Your contributions are appreciated.
