Erin Vogt, a former standout swimmer at Cape Girardeau Central High School, put an impressive cap over the weekend on a standout freshman season at the University of Arizona.
Vogt earned three All-American honors as she helped the Wildcats place fourth in the NCAA Championships held in Athens, Ga.
Vogt placed sixth in the 400 individual medley and she was 10th in the 200 butterfly while also swimming a leg on Arizona's sixth-place 400 medley relay team.
As a senior in high school, Vogt was regarded as one of the nation's top swimmers for her age group. She attended Marquette High School in St. Louis for her senior season so she could compete for the renowned Rockwood Swim Club.
Vogt won a pair of state titles and was named the state meet MVP at Cape Central during her freshman season. She also attended Central as a sophomore and junior but didn't compete for the Lady Tigers, instead swimming the club circuit.
Last year, Vogt finished seventh in the 100 butterfly at the U.S. National Swimming Championships in Minneapolis. The 100 butterfly was one of seven events in which Vogt competed during the national meet.
Another former Central standout, Jon Younghouse, is a standout at the University of Texas, which will compete in the NCAA men's meet later this week in Indianapolis.
A junior at Texas, Younghouse earned two All-American honors at last year's national meet as he was fourth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 1,650 freestyle.
Younghouse was also second in the 400 freestyle at last year's U.S. Summer Nationals to earn a berth in the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships, which will be held in Sydney, Australia, in August.
