WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Defending champion David Toms shot a 7-under-par 64 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Michelob Championship.

Toms, the PGA winner, needed only 22 putts on the River Course.

Shigeki Maruyama, Neal Lancaster, Jimmy Green, J.J. Henry and Michael Muehr shot 65s to share second place after a day when conditions were near-perfect.

Ty Tryon, the 17-year-old player making his professional debut, bogeyed his first hole and shot a 76.

Among other notables who struggled, two-time winner David Duval shot a 73 and Justin Leonard, coming off a victory last week in Texas, opened with a 72.

Samsung Championship

VALLEJO, Calif. -- Se Ri Pak and hometown favorite Dorothy Delasin shot 2-under-par 70s in windy conditions to take the first-round lead in the Samsung World Championship.

Sophie Gustafson, Kelly Robbins and Emilee Klein opened with 71s. Karrie Webb is two strokes off the lead, with Annika Sorenstam at 73 and defending champion Juli Inkster at 74.

Pak played a steady round with only two bogeys to tie Delasin for the lead in the elite 20-player event. The Women's British Open champion returned from a five-week break last week to win the ALFAC Champions in Alabama for her fifth victory of the year.
