NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Central's boys basketball team ran into a rejuvinated New Madrid County Central team on Friday night in a SEMO conference matchup.

But while Friday's game was a far cry from Central's blowout victory over the Eagles in Central's season opener, the result was the same in a 72-65 win for the Tigers.

NMCC kept the Tigers within striking distance throughout the game and cut the lead to 66-63 with less than a minute remaining. Central (13-3) made several big free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

"We really executed late in the game and that was so crucial for us," Central coach Derek McCord said.

Ryan Delph led the Tigers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Scott Chestnutt added 19 points, including his first career 3-pointer, for the Tigers, Jake Knepp had a season-high 13 off the bench and Mitch Craft had 10. Will Johnson had nine points and seven assists.

The Tigers shot 7-for-12 from 3-point range in the game.

"We had so many guys step up," McCord said. "Jake Knepp's probably my player of the game. Boy did he respond."

Central's junior varsity team won 49-48. Tyrone Reece scored 12 points for Central and Anthony Hempstead and Xavier Delph had 10 apiece. Central will play for the Central JV tournament title today against Kelly.
