Thomas, Young earn first-team all-state

~ The Area high school baseball players were honored by the Missouri Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association

Notre Dame senior Colton Young dominated hitters with his right arm.

He was rewarded for his efforts by earning a spot on the Missouri Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association's Class 3 first team.

Young was one of three local players to earn a spot on a first team. Scott County Central's Josh Boese and Oak Ridge's Brett Thomas both earned a spot on the Class 1 first team.

Young helped the Bulldogs stay ranked No. 1 in the state for most of the season before falling to eventual state champion Bishop DuBourg in the state quarterfinals.

Young went 9-0 with a 1.18 ERA. He struck out 72 and walked 19 over 59 1/3 innings. He also collected one save.

Young was one of Notre Dame's top hitters as well. He batted .429 with four homers and 24 RBIs. He also swiped 14 bases without getting caught.

Thomas helped lead the Blue Jays to the Class 1 state quarterfinals. He batted .547 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs. He hit a home run every 8.17 at-bats and boasted a 1.147 slugging percentage.

Thomas also served as Oak Ridge's pitching ace. He went 7-2 with a 0.59 ERA over 59 1/3 innings. He struck out 92 and walked 25.

Boese helped the Braves post a 9-8 record by batting .588.

Four local players earned recognition on second teams. Oran's Gabe Kielhofner made the Class 1 second team, Scott City's Skylar Cobb earned a nod on the Class 2 second team, Notre Dame's Jeremy Essner was on the Class 3 second team and Jackson's Tyler Qualls made the Class 4 second team.
