Last year: Karrie Webb won the season-ending tournament for the second time in six years, edging Sweden's Annika Sorenstam by two strokes. Sorenstam closed with a 65 to break Webb's 1999 season scoring record with a stroke to spare, finishing at 69.42.

Last week: Lorie Kane and Janice Moodie successfully defended their Hyundai Team Matches title, beating four-time champions Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper 3 and 2.

Notes: Sorenstam, the 1997 winner in Las Vegas, won her second straight Mizuno Classic title two weeks ago in Japan to become the LPGA Tour's first 10-time winner in 34 years. The 32-year-old Swede also won events in Australia and Sweden, giving her 12 worldwide victories in 24 starts. She has broken her tour earnings record with $2,648,904 and is on pace to shatter her scoring average mark at 68.69. ... Se Ri Pak, the 1999 winner, has five victories this year and is second on the money list with $1,689,281. ... South Korea's Hee-Won Han, No. 14 on the money list, is skipping the tournament, giving No. 31 Dorothy Delasin the final spot in the 30-player field.

Faxon and Couples won the 1994 tournament, and McCarron teamed with Bruce Lietzke to win the 1997 title.

Notes: Tiger Woods is playing the first of three events in 11 days. He will join Rich Beem, Justin Leonard and Davis Love III next Tuesday and Wednesday in the PGA Grand Slam in Hawaii, and face Phil Mickelson, Mark O'Meara and Fred Couples in the weekend Skins Game in Indio, Calif. ... Duval also is in the field along with European Ryder Cup players Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Thomas Bjorn. Westwood won the 1998 tournament, and Bjorn beat Garcia in a playoff in 1999. ... The Casio World Open is next week in Kaimon.

Notes: PGA champion Rich Beem tops the field along with fellow American Charles Howell III, Australian stars Appleby, Robert Allenby, Craig Parry, Peter Lonard and Aaron Baddeley and New Zealand's Craig Perks. ... Beem and Lonard won the PGA Tour division of the Hyundai Team Matches last week in California. ... Baddeley won the 1999 tournament an amateur and successfully defended his title as a pro in 2000. The 21-year-old star finished 10th on the Buy.com Tour money list to earn a 2003 PGA Tour card. ... South Africa's Gary Player won the event a record seven times, one more than Jack Nicklaus. ...
