The Southeast Missouri State tennis team opened its season with a 7-0 loss at Evansville on Saturday night at the Tri-State Athletic Club.
The match was the first for the Redhawks under coach Mark Elliott.
Southeast lost two doubles matches to yield the doubles point to the Purple Aces (3-0). Southeast's No. 1 double team of juniors Bryce Kristal and Drew Kristal dropped a 9-7 decision to Brittany Brown and Beth Peyton. Southeast's No. 2 team of sophomore Julia Masotti and senior Luz Garcia lost an 8-5 decision to Lisa Kawamoto and Sara Wilhoite.
In singles, Bryce Kristal lost 6-0, 6-4 to Brown at No. 1; Drew Kristal lost 6-3, 6-4 to Kawamoto at No. 2; Masotti fell 6-2, 6-0 to Peyton at No. 3; Garcia was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Wilhoite in No. 4; freshman Elise Nattier lost her college debut 6-1, 6-2 to Allie Cox at No. 5; and senior Kimmy Anderson of Jackson lost 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 to Stephanie Millis at No. 6 singles.
Southeast (0-1) continues its road trip Friday and Saturday in Little Rock, Ark., with matches against Alcorn State and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Berry finished second
Junior John Berry finished second in the long jump to lead Southeast finishers at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
Berry had a jump of 7.33 meters. It marked the second straight weekend Berry had finished second at the Indiana University facility.
Southeast has nine other top 10 finishers.
Julie Koeningstein and Brenda Whitworth led the Southeast women with sixth-place finishes. Koeningstein finished the 3,000 meters in 10 minutes, 19.51 seconds, while Whitworth clocked 1:37.54 in the 600 meters.
