Aaron Alvey homered and set three pitching records as Louisville, Ky., beat Sendai, Japan, 1-0 Sunday night to win the Little League World Series.
With one out in the top of the first, Alvey sent the first pitch he saw 250 feet -- the outfield wall is 205 -- to center field to put Louisville in front. He then struck out 11 on his way to setting World Series records for strikeouts (44), consecutive no-hit innings (13) and scoreless innings (21).
Louisville is the first U.S. team to win the title since Tom's River, N.J., beat Kashima, Japan, 12-9 in 1998.
Football
Kansas City free safety Jerome Woods, a key member of the secondary since 1996, has broken his leg and is out for the year. The injury happened when Woods was trying to make a tackle on running back Shaun Alexander Saturday night during the Chiefs' 17-14 exhibition loss in Seattle.
Quarterback Michael Vick's bruised right elbow will not keep him from playing in the Atlanta Falcons' preseason finale against Cincinnati Thursday.
Vick, a left-handed passer, did not return after getting sacked in the second quarter of a 21-19 win at Dallas on Saturday night. X-rays taken at Texas Stadium were negative.
"The doctor said he could've played last night, but the nerves ... he didn't get the feeling back in it," coach Dan Reeves said Sunday. "So he's OK."
Horse racing
War Emblem was upset by Came Home in Sunday's $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar, Calif.
