Baseball coach Dave Van Horn will leave Nebraska to become head coach at Arkansas, ESPN reported. Van Horn did not return calls made by The Associated Press to his home and cell phone. Nebraska sports information director Chris Anderson said she had no information and could not confirm the report. Officials at the University of Arkansas also could not be reached. Speculation that Van Horn might leave Nebraska had been the talk of football-crazy Lincoln.

Football

The Bears waived three free agents: wide receiver Jerris Evans, quarterback Brad Lewis and running back Robert Sanford. Evans and Lewis were undrafted free agents signed after April's NFL draft, while Sanford signed earlier during the free agency period. Chicago's roster now stands at 91 players and will be trimmed to 88 by the start of training camp July 26.

Golf

Brett Quigley and Hidemichi Tanaka had 6-under-par 64s Thursday and were atop the crowded leaderboard in the Greater Hartford Open on the TPC at River Highlands at Cromwell, Conn. Quigley is winless in six seasons on the PGA Tour, while Tanaka is a 10-time winner on the Japanese tour. Scott Verplank, Tim Herron, Briny Baird, Jonathan Kaye, Skip Kendall and Japan's Kaname Yokoo shot 65s, and Steve Pate and Kirk Triplett topped a six-player group at 66.

Karrie Webb, winless on the LPGA Tour this year, took advantage of soft playing conditions to shoot an 8-under 64 in the first round at the Rochester International at Pittsford, N.Y. Webb, who won here three years ago, blistered the narrow Locust Hill Country Club course with nine birdies in her lowest round in nine tournaments this year and led Meg Mallon by three strokes.

Hockey

Flames right wing Jarome Iginla won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL's most outstanding player as voted on by his peers. Iginla beat Sean Burke of the Coyotes and Patrick Roy of the Avalanche.
