Southeast's Nett makes All-Tournament team

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Southeast Missouri State University junior second baseman Brooke Nett was selected to the 12-player Ohio Valley Conference All-Tournament team Sunday as the OVC Softball Championships ended.

Nett went 3-for-8 at the plate as the Otahkians went 1-2 in the tournament.

Top-seeded Eastern Kentucky battled out of the loser's bracket to win its first tournament title, defeating second-seeded Tennessee Tech 7-4 in the championship game.

Earlier Sunday, EKU routed Eastern Illinois 10-1 in the loser's bracket final, then nipped Tech 1-0 to set up a final contest.

EKU (34-12) pitcher Jonelle Csora, who won both games against Tech (36-23) Sunday, was the tournament MVP. The Colonels will host a three-game play-in series beginning Thursday against the champion of the Southwest Athletic Conference.

Hockey

Derek Plante scored midway through the third period and rallied the United States to a 2-2 tie with Germany at the World Hockey championships in Karlstad, Sweden.

Later, Pittsburg Penguin Jan Hrdina scored the winner to lead three-time defending champion Czech Republic to a 5-1 victory over Canada.

In Goteborg, Thomas Rhodin scored the winner and had an assist to lift Sweden to a 4-2 win over archrival Finland.

All six teams had already wrapped up berths in Tuesday's quarterfinals, when the tournament heats up after 10 days of preliminary and qualification games.

The Czechs will now play Russia in the quarterfinals, while Sweden faces Germany. The United States and Canada will face either Slovakia or Finland.

Trent Green feels like a new man.

A year ago at Kansas City's May minicamp, their gimpy-kneed new quarterback could only watch.

Now he has two strong knees, an exciting new wide receiver and a fresh boost of confidence. It's like those NFL-high 24 interceptions last season never even happened.

"It's night and day," he said.

This is the way minicamp is supposed to be.

"Yes, it's a new experience for me," Green said as the Chiefs completed their three-day camp on Sunday. "It's been a couple of years since I've been able to participate in minicamps."

Green spent much of the minicamp completing passes to Johnnie Morton, who was signed as a free agent from Detroit and will be counted on as the No. 1 wide receiver.
