Southeast Missourian Player of the Week: Garett Schaefer

When it comes to high school football, it's hard to find a more intense rivalry than the one between Scott City and Chaffee.

Scott City was winless entering this year's game on Chaffee's homecoming night, but running back Garett Schaefer and his offensive line helped the Rams score the biggest win on their schedule.

Schaefer, a junior, ran for 169 yards on 23 carries while scoring two touchdowns in Scott City's 27-6 victory.

"Garett is fast and he's tough," Scott City coach Jim May told the Southeast Missourian after the win. "For 130 pounds, he's a fire plug, that I guarantee you. I'm real happy with what he's doing and how he's played."

Although the play didn't result in a touchdown, Schaefer's 31-yard run on fourth-and-2 in the second quarter kept alive a Scott City scoring drive, during which he carried four times for 55 yards.

According to Schaefer, it was all happened because of the guys in front of him.

"The linemen really executed our run game well tonight," Schaefer said on Friday. "They opened up the holes for me."
