Led by the Red Devil duo of Shelton Simmons and Levi McKinnie, Chaffee overwhelmed the Leopold Wildcats 58-34 on Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Chaffee, Mo.
Both Simmons and McKinnie scored 12 points but in different ways. While Simmons' scoring output was balanced through all four quarters and coming from inside the arch, McKinnie scored 11 points in the third quarter alone with three baskets from beyond the three-point line. Blake Yarbro also added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
The Red Devils scored only 10 points in both the first and second quarters but were able to get away with the slow offensive start by holding the Wildcats to three single-digit periods. Chaffee turned up the heat in the second half with a 22-point third quarter to seal the win and tied Leopold 16-16 in the fourth quarter to draw out the clock.
Keegan Deck scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats, who made only one three-point basket and went 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Leopold (5-10) will look to regroup at Oran on Jan. 26, in one final tuneup before the MVC Tournament Jan. 29-Feb. 1, hosted by Meadow Heights.
Chaffee collectively made five baskets from the three-point line and was 9-of-15 from the charity stripe. The Red Devils (4-10) have won two straight games for the first time all season and will look to continue their momentum into the Scott-Miss Conference Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 37 at Oran, Mo., where they will play Scott City at 10 a.m.
