BENTON, Ky. — After a long and frustrating stretch of losses, the Sikeston baseball team finally found a way to win, staging an incredible comeback during a 10-9 victory over Mount Vernon (Ill.) at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky on Saturday, April 15.

The Bulldogs (2-10) trailed by a significant margin before rallying together and scoring seven runs in an unforgettable inning, leaving fans cheering and their opponents stunned.

“I’m really excited about our direction,” said Sikeston coach Wyatt Pratt. “We’ve put together some good games and I think we’ve finally broken through. I’m looking forward to getting after it again this week.”

The Rams (10-8) gained a 2-0 advantage after scoring one run in the first and second innings.

Sikeston responded in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 3-2 lead after Jacob Leavitt scored on an error,

Luke Gadberry doubled to score Brice Gordon and Gadberry scored on another error.

Mount Vernon regained the lead in the ensuing inning and extended the lead to 7-3 in the fourth inning.

The Rams tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to increase the lead to 9-3, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Bulldogs.

Sikeston's rally began with a double by Gadberry that scored Gordon and continued when Rush Ault and Gadberry scored after batters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.

Trace Sullivan singled on a hard ground ball to score Conner Wallace and Carter Crow scored on a passed ball to narrow the lead to 9-8.

Noah Pruitt doubled on a fly ball to right field to score Heckemeyer and Sullivan and give the lead back to the Bulldogs.

Daeton Taylor earned the win on the mound. He threw 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Joseph Heckemeyer earned the win after pitching the final inning.

He didn’t give up any runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Pruitt started the game, pitched the first 3.1 innings, and allowed four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Sikeston hosts Charleston (4-7) on Tuesday, April 18, and travels to Marion, Illinois on Wednesday, April 19.
