Scott County Central, Woodland, Kelly and Chaffee all bounced back with victories Thursday during the consolation quarterfinal round of the 56th annual University High Christmas Tournament being played at the Show Me Center.
Scott Central, the No. 7 seed in the 16-team event, slipped past No. 15 Oak Ridge 61-57; No. 8 Woodland routed No. 16 Meadow Heights 71-52; No. 13 Kelly edged No. 12 Delta 65-62; and No. 14 Chaffee rolled past No. 11 Leopold 66-48.
In today's consolation semifinals, it will be Woodland vs. Kelly at noon and Scott Central vs. Chaffee at 1:30 p.m.
Oak Ridge, Meadow Heights, Delta and Leopold were all eliminated after losing their first two tourney games.
Scott Central 61, Oak Ridge 57
The Braves trailed by a point with about one minute left in the fourth quarter, but they scored the final five points to prevail.
Chris Johnson paced the Braves (6-2) offensively with 21 points while Todd Blissett added 18.
Oak Ridge (1-7) got 13 points from Beau Morrison.
Woodland 71, M. Heights 52
This game was not even as close as the score indicates as Woodland led 47-22 at halftime and 65-34 after three quarters before clearing its bench.
The Cardinals (6-3) were led by Jared Houchins with 17 points and Chris Masters with 13.
Meadow Heights (1-6) received 13 points from Brandon Tallent and 11 from both Josh Mayfield and Cody Thompson.
Kelly 65, Delta 62
Delta suffered its second competitive loss of the tourney as Kelly outscored the Bobcats 19-14 in the fourth quarter to prevail.
Michael Romas scored 11 points and Brooks Heuring added 10 for the Hawks (3-5).
For Delta (4-5), Troy Nussbaum pumped in 24 points and Craig Bock followed with 19.
Chaffee 66, Leopold 48
Matt Stroup continued his high-scoring ways as Chaffee recorded its first U-High victory in 11 years.
Stroup poured in 28 points, giving him 57 in the first two tournament games. The Red Devils (2-2) led just 30-26 at halftime before blowing the contest open in the second half.
Ashton James paced Leopold (3-5) with 19 points and Daniel Schaab added 14.
Leopold played both its tourney contests without head coach Carlton Thoma, who underwent heart bypass surgery Thursday morning after complaining of chest pains and being hospitalized prior to Wednesday's first round.
