Redhawks softball completes weekend sweep of Governors

The Southeast Missouri State softball team wrapped up a perfect weekend to start Ohio Valley Conference play Sunday.

And Stephanie Huffman was once again in the center of the action.

Southeast completed a three-game sweep of host Austin Peay with a 5-2 victory behind the pitching of Huffman, who was credited with the victory in all three contests.

Huffman, a senior right-hander, worked all seven innings Sunday, allowing just two hits, with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Huffman (6-2) hurled 14 1/3 innings in the series, notching two wins as a starter and one victory in relief. She gave up eight hits and four runs.

The Redhawks (10-7, 3-0 OVC) had nine hits, led by Lindsay Pickering. She homered and doubled, driving in four runs.

Michelle Summers and freshman Jenn Monaghan matched Pickering with two hits apiece.

Southeast built a 5-0 lead, thanks largely to Pickering's two-run homer in the fourth inning and her two-run double in the sixth.

The Governors (4-14-2, 0-3) reached Huffman for their only two runs in the sixth, but she closed things out in the seventh.

Southeast has a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader today at Middle Tennessee State.

Baseball postponed

Today's opener of a scheduled three-game baseball series between Missouri State and host Southeast has been postponed due to a high probability of rain.

The squads were supposed to play single contests today, Tuesday and Wednesday at Capaha Field.

Southeast coach Mark Hogan said he hopes to still be able to play all three games, with perhaps a doubleheader either Tuesday or Wednesday, but more will be determined today, based on how Tuesday's forecast looks.

"They were still in Springfield and there was no reason to bring them in here with an 80 percent chance of rain, especially since we've still got two days to get the series in," Hogan said. "Right now the schedule is kind of up in the air. We'll just have to see how Tuesday's forecast looks."

Southeast is 6-10 and has lost three straight, after being outscored 20-2 during a two-game weekend series at Memphis. MSU is 9-7 and has won three straight.
