Southeast Missouri State gymnast Taylor Westrick has been named Midwest Independent Conference specialist of the week for her performance Saturday at Illinois State.

Westrick, a sophomore, scored a 9.850 on the balance beam to earn her fifth career individual title.

That score ranks sixth nationally and first in the South Central Region following the opening weekend of competition.

The Redhawks visit Missouri on Saturday for a 2 p.m. meet.

Southeast's indoor track and field teams begin the season in earnest today and Saturday in Carbondale, Ill., for a meet hosted by SIU.

A limited number of Southeast athletes participated at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic in December.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Travon Beard, Jerika Lewis, Magan Edwards and Rachel Kahle won at Arkansas State. Shemeika Brewer was a winner in the triple jump.

Men's winners were Brandon Colbert in the shot put and Blake Carter in the long jump.
