PERRYVILLE -- After a season-low seven points the night before, Perryville's Paul Weinkein rebounded with 26 points as Perryville defeated Herculaneum 61-52 in Jefferson County Conference action.

Perryville improved to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Weinkein also turned in 14 rebounds. The game came on the heels of a 49-34 loss to Red Bud in the Chester Tournament.

"He came out sluggish last night against Red Bud," said Perryville coach Dean Lewis. "I really challenged him tonight to see what kind player he can be and he really stepped up. He just really played big tonight."

Weinkein was the lone Pirate in double figures.

"We need him to do that every night," said Lewis. "When he doesn't, we usually don't do very well."

Perryville led 29-21 at halftime and saw Herculaneum close the gap to 41-38 by the start of the fourth quarter. Perryville held a 20-14 scoring edge on the stretch to pull away.
