The Perryville boys soccer program got off on the right foot.

The Pirates posted a 6-3 victory at the Festus Invitational on Tuesday in the program's first game.

Ken Stephenson, Ben Prevallet, Wade Lawrence, Alex Robinson, Cody Leimbach and Dalton Hoehn scored for Perryville.

The Pirates face Hancock in the second round of the tournament Thursday.

Notre Dame 2, Lafayette 1

The Bulldogs opened their season with a victory at home as they try for their third consecutive state championship.

Lafayette opened the scoring on a corner kick, but Notre Dame fought back to score two goals before halftime. Josh Robert and Brock Dirnberger found the back of the net for Notre Dame.

"We played really great soccer in the first half, great team speed," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said.

Saxony Lutheran 4, Sikeston 0

The Crusaders started their season with a shutout on the road.

Garrett Fritsche, Ross Gage, Andrew Etzold and Mark Buerck scored in the win for the Crusaders (1-0).

Bryant Steffens had three saves to earn the shutout.

SOFTBALL Chaffee 4, Sikeston 3

Sarah Bedwell's one-out double scored the winning run from first base as the Red Devils won on the road in eight innings.

Bedwell, who went 2-for-4 with a triple and had three RBIs, scored Sierra Miller, who had singled.

Madelyn Kiefer, the winning pitcher, also went 2-for-4 for Chaffee (2-2).

The Indians took it to the Bulldogs, failing to drop a single game on their way to victory. Jackson, which hosts Central today, improved to 4-0 with the win.

"We used this as another step in the process," Jackson coach David Brummel said. "But I was very pleased with the way we played."
