Southeast Missouri State University pitcher Todd Pennington, the NCAA Division I earned-run average leader this year, did not have his name called during Tuesday's opening 20 rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.
Pennington, a junior right-hander who went 12-2 with a 1.33 ERA this season, was considered to have an outside chance at being selected on the draft's first day.
The draft will conclude today with rounds 21 through 50.
Meanwhile, Southwest Missouri State had four players selected Tuesday, including two who performed last summer for the Cape Girardeau Capahas.
Catcher Ben Margalski, who is from the St. Louis area, was taken in the 16th round by Philadelphia. Pitcher Matt Palmer, a Caruthersville, Mo., native, was taken in the 20th round by Colorado.
Also taken from Southwest were pitcher John Rheinecker (first-round, No. 37 overall, Oakland) and first baseman Ryan Howard (fifth round, Philadelphia).
The only Ohio Valley Conference player taken Tuesday was Tennessee Tech pitcher Jim Ed Warden (sixth round, Cleveland).
