Notre Dame edges Perryville in duel

The Notre Dame baseball team evened its record at 2-2 by winning a 1-0 thriller against visiting Perryville on Tuesday afternoon.

Lee Essner (2-0) pitched a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks. Perryville (1-2) hurler Shaun Roth allowed just three hits in going the distance. He fanned three and walked none.

"It was a good high school baseball game," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said. "Essner was dominating again and their kid really pitched well."

The Bulldogs scored the only run in the sixth inning. With one out, Matt Wulfers and Blake Urhahn singled. Wulfers stole third and scored when Tony Longman hit a ground ball that Perryville just missed turning into a double play.NOTRE DAME 1, PERRYVILLE 0

Perryville climbed above the .500 mark with a road shutout.

The Pirates (3-2) received two goals from Ashley Hadler and one goal apiece from Christina Schremp and Amber Hacker. Schremp, Hacker and Jodie Amschler all had assists.

Chastity Marr made five saves for her second shutout.

St. Vincent 9, Fredericktown 0

The Squaws clobbered host Fredericktown for their first win after five losses to start the season.

Whitney Guth scored four goals and added two assists to lead St. Vincent. Jessica Berhle scored two goals.

Sierra Paulus added a goal and two assists, Joy Donze had an a goal and an assist and Miranda Holmes scored a goal. Single assists were contributed by Hannah Schremp, Theresa Mattingly, Lisa Abbott and Kelsey Kutz.

Central's girls dominated Sikeston in a road dual meet, scoring 91 1/2 to Sikeston's 46 1/2. Stephanie Wehner and Meg Yates were each part of three wins for the Tigers.

The Perryville boys won the Park Hills Invitational with 120 1/2 points. Kyle Dobbelare (triple jump, high jump) and Jesse Whistler (100, 200) each had two individual wins for the Pirates.

Central continued its fast start as Ty Gramling sizzled during the Tigers' victory in a triangular meet hosted by Notre Dame at Bent Creek Golf Course.

Gramling shot a 3-under-par 33 for nine holes. The Tigers (5-0) had four more golfers shoot under 40.

"That's an outstanding score by Ty, especially because it was cold and windy," Central coach Dick Wadlington said. "As a team, that's a very good score."
