NFL opts not to fine Owens for pompoms episode

Waving pompoms to celebrate his latest touchdown wasn't enough to bring San Francisco 49ers receiver Terrell Owens any disciplinary action from the NFL.

Owens was warned by the league earlier this season after he pulled a pen from his sock and autographed a football following a touchdown in Seattle.

In Sunday's rain-soaked 20-14 home loss to Green Bay, Owens caught a 45-yard TD pass from Jeff Garcia with 1:04 to play. He then borrowed a cheerleader's gold-colored pompoms and did a little dance.

The NFL office said Monday that the celebration wasn't egregious enough to warrant punishment.

Harrington sidelined

Lions rookie quarterback Joey Harrington will miss the rest of the season because of an irregular heartbeat.

Harrington, the No. 3 overall draft pick out of Oregon, left Sunday's game against Tampa Bay with the heart problem and was taken to the hospital for tests and observation.

He was expected to stay in the hospital until Monday evening.

Doctors said Harrington's heartbeat returned to a normal rhythm before he was hospitalized. Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg said the ailment is not career-threatening. Detroit (3-11) has two games remaining this season.

"If this were Week 5, we would expect him to return, but there is no way that he will be back within two weeks," Mornhinweg said.

Harrington entered Sunday's game having completed just over 50 percent of his passes, with 2,294 yards, 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Holmes may miss game

A hip injury will probably sideline NFL rushing leader Priest Holmes this week as the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves a team of suddenly hobbled players.

Holmes and kick returner/wide receiver Dante Hall were both on crutches Monday following Sunday's 31-24 loss to Denver, which placed the Chiefs (7-7) on the verge of missing the playoffs.

Definitely out for Sunday's home finale against San Diego is fullback Tony Richardson, who sustained a shoulder injury in the first half at Denver.

Eagles seek home field

The Philadelphia Eagles will clinch home-field advantage in the NFC if they win their final two games, at Dallas and at the Giants.

Many of their players say they consider it critical.

But Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden, whose team also is 11-3, said Monday he doesn't consider home-field advantage crucial, even though the Bucs have lost in Philadelphia in each of the last three seasons. They were eliminated from the playoffs there the last two seasons under Tony Dungy, and lost in Philly 20-10 on Oct. 20 -- the reason the Eagles own the tiebreaker.
