ND boys cross country team places second at Potosi meet

Notre Dame boys cross country coach Bill Davis was happy with his team's second-place showing Saturday afternoon at the Potosi Invitational, even though his team finished more than 80 points behind the winning team.

"There was a lot of good competition," Davis said.

Leading the way was nationally ranked Potosi, which placed five runners in the top six for a score of 17.

Notre Dame, the defending Class 2 state champion but a Class 3 team this year, had 104 to beat Class 3 district rival Ste. Genevieve's 132.

"I wanted to see how we matched up with Ste. Genevieve for the other spot in the district," Davis said. "We ran really well."

Two teams will move on from the district to the state meet, with Potosi the favorite for one of those spots.

Logan Davis, Dillon Klaffer and Neil Kanneberg had top-20 finishes for the Bulldogs.

Greg Gibson of Jackson led all locals with a seventh-place finish in 16 minutes, 58 seconds, just 1:04 off the winning pace.

Perryville's Montana Giesler was eighth, Central's Tyler Yeargain was ninth, Davis was 11th, Klaffer was 12th, Saxony Lutheran's Brandon Etzold was 14th, and Kanneberg was 16th.

The Central girls placed first as Brittany Moreland paced the field and Veronica Schabbing added a sixth-place finish.

The Jackson girls finished fifth despite being without top runner Amy Sterling and another member of the team's top five.

"It doesn't look like we'll get them back before conference," said Jackson coach Andrea Talley, who feared some of the her runners' injuries may be season-ending.

Notre Dame's boys junior varsity team finished first to remain unbeaten.

Swimming with sharks

Saturday wasn't kind to the Central and Notre Dame boys swimming teams on the scoreboard, but the locals were hosting some high-class competition in the 13-team Cape Rock Invitational at Central Municipal Pool.

"It was a great day," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "The meet is growing; the spectators were amazing."

Central finished eighth with 144 points and Notre Dame was 10th with 97.

Springfield Glendale won with 353, Lindbergh was second at 318 and Parkway Central scored 272.

Central's Peyton Waggener made a state cut in the 200-meter individual medley, finishing fourth in 2:05.64.

Goals, goals, goals

Saxony Lutheran scored a bunch of them -- 11 -- to beat Crocker City on Saturday. Bryant Steffens had five goals and Mark Buerck added a hat trick. Joe Buerck, Andrew Etzold and Katie Winter added single tallies.

Andrew Etzold also had four assists. Mark Buerck had two assists. Other assists went to Winter and Brandon Etzold, who also ran in the Potosi cross country meet on Saturday.

Unbeaten

The New Salem Baptist girls volleyball team is racking up victories at a quick clip with doubleaders this season.

The Marble Hill school won two more on Friday night to improve to 9-0.

New Salem beat St. Louis Christian 25-10, 25-13, then beat People's Christian 25-13, 25-14.

For the night, Sarah Green had 19 kills, Laura Poole had 35 assists and Cesley Cook had five aces.

Cook also had three kills against St. Louis Christian. Martha Poole had seven kills and two aces against People's Christian, while Kelsey Barlow added five kills and two aces.

Unknown territory

The Notre Dame softball team hadn't seen Windsor nor Festus before slipping past both teams to win the Class 3 District 1 tournament at Perryville last week.

But Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett wasn't surprised the two teams took solid shots at the Bulldogs after they had rolled through the district last year with a pair of 10-0 victories en route to a state runner-up finish.

"We expect everyone to play their best game against us," Graviett said. "When you get to this time of year, it's always going to be competitive.

"We didn't know what to expect because we hadn't seen these teams, but that was a two-way thing."
