The atmosphere at Westwood Hills Country Club looked slightly different on Friday as many schools stepped onto the greens to put their golf skills to the test at this year’s Poplar Bluff Golf Invitational.
The Poplar Bluff Mules boys golf team has been on a tear this spring by landing many wins throughout the season, and they aimed to keep it going with another golf invitational win. The Mules did just that by securing first place with a score of 291, followed by the Jackson Indians, who took second with 311, and the Mules JV team, who snagged third while shooting 315.
Jackson’s sophomore Ian Lambert was the leading player by placing first individually by shooting a 70, and Poplar Bluff’s Lawson Barks secured second place by shooting a 71.
The Mules collected its sixth invitational title with the win and improved to 7-2 on the season. Mules head coach Tyler Davis said he’s enjoyed the way the team has played, and he hopes it can continue as they reach the midway mark of the season.
“Our team is looking really good,” Davis said. “I'm really excited about how this the rest of the season will go. As long as we keep our heads down and keep moving forward, then we will take this momentum pretty deep into the postseason.”
Barks has been the leading golfer for the Mules by winning multiple individual titles this season and has set the tone with how each player should approach the game, according to Davis.
“Lawson is our only senior, and he's really been consistent all year,” Davis said. “He recently shot a 66 out here during practice, so hopefully, we’ll be able to see a little of the magic as the season progresses. He’s really kept the team together and level-headed at every tournament and practice, and it really shows in how we’ve been playing recently.”
The Mules will be at Crown Pointe Golf Club on Monday for the Mehlville Golf Invitational.
