An icon in his day, Muegge was so influential at Cape Central that the school named its football field after the legendary coach.
Muegge started his coaching tenure in 1928 and eventually coached the school's first state championship teams, which both came in 1954. That year both the basketball and baseball teams, under Muegge, won state titles.
Muegge retired in 1954, but died a year later of a heart attack.
Muegge came to Cape Girardeau after a stellar athletic career at the University of Illinois in both football and wrestling.
For the first three years at Central, Muegge was the Director of Boy's Athletics and was the Instructor of Hygiene. During those three years, he turned out successful football teams with the 1929 team topping the list by going undefeated and unscored upon.
After a three-year stint of coaching at Steelton, Pa., Muegge returned to Cape Central in 1934. Under Muegge's leadership, Cape Central's football team went undefeated in 1935, 1936 and 1943.
He also produced stellar basketball teams in 1940, 1942 and 1943.
Every year, Central gives out the Lou W. Muegge award for the senior athlete who exemplifies the traits and characteristics of Lou W. Muegge. The honor originated in the 1957-58 school year.
