DELTA, Mo. -- Not all theories test out positive.
But Delta girls' coach Randy White thinks he's on to a theory that has stood the test of time.
"As long as you reach your potential, then you've had a successful season," White said. "I don't worry about the wins and losses. I just want to play hard, smart basketball and let the wins and losses take care of themselves."
Last year the Bobcats came close to their potential and they reaped a successful season.
The results were a district championship and a 20-7 record. The season ended with a 60-56 sectional loss to Couch.
The good news is Delta has at least as much potential as last season with all five starters returning. Rebecca Below, a 6-foot senior, averaged 18 points as a junior and will likely be a major contributor this year. She was all-region and all-conference last year.
Delta is also proving another theory:You can never have too many Cooks in the kitchen, or in this case on the court.
Senior point guard Rebecca Cook (5-6) was all-region and all-conference last year. Senior Sarah Jo Cook (5-10) averaged nine points last year but is known more for her passing and defense. Sarah Cook is a 5-8 swing player that started for Delta as a freshman last year.
The final starter back from last year is senior guard Katrina Flores (5-2).
"Katrina has made tremendous improvements over the past year and she has continued to really improve her game," White said.
White also has a deeper bench. Senior guard Andrea Dohogne (5-3) has made significant improvement over the summer, according to White, and will definitely contribute this year. Tiffany Johnson is a 5-4 junior guard who will also play several minutes. Freshmen center Becky Rozmirsky (5-10) could also see playing time.
Delta faces a number of Class 3 teams including Charleston, New Madrid County Central and Kelly. The Bobcats also play Class 4 Sikeston late in the season. In fact, there are only two Class 1 teams on Delta's schedule.
"They know we have a rough schedule and they're working hard in practice," White said. "They also know they have to work hard every night out to be successful."
