NEW MADRID -- Cape Girardeau Central High's girls basketball team, ranked seventh in the state in Class 4A, won 14 of its first 16 games this season.
The Lady Tigers then hit a bit of a slump early this month, losing three of its next four games. The losses came against Poplar Bluff (twice) and Notre Dame.
Central, which will play its biggest game of the regular season Thursday at Jackson, needed to end its slide Monday at New Madrid County Central to send much needed momentum into the Jackson game.
The Lady Tigers played with more intensity and beat New Madrid on the road 50-36. A 22-6 third quarter advantage and 18 points by Nichole Thiele was the difference.
"It was a good game for us," said Central coach Paula Watkins, whose team improved to 16-5. "We played with more intensity. We played better defense and we hit the boards well."
Central welcomed the return of Laura Lukens, a 6-foot senior center. Lukens had missed the past couple games with a leg injury.
Lukens played only four minutes, and Watkins said she wouldn't know how much Lukens will play against Jackson until later in the week.
