Jackson High School's girls tennis team narrowly missed out on a district championship Thursday, but the Lady Indians' sophomore sensation Kim Anderson came away with the singles crown.

In a wild Class 4A, District 1 Tournament that began outside and wound up inside, Oakville from the St. Louis area won the team title with 17 1/2 points while Jackson finished second with 17 points. But both squads qualify for the team sectional competition to be held Oct. 14 in St. Louis.

Most of the tournament was played on Southeast Missouri State University's new courts, but when heavy rain fell late in the afternoon, the tourney had to be finished inside at Universal Health & Fitness Center.

Anderson gained a measure of revenge when she won the singles title by beating Poplar Bluff's Megan Bridges 6-1, 6-2. Bridges had handed Anderson her only two losses during the regular season.

Both Anderson and Bridges qualify for the state individual tournament that will be held Oct. 20-21 in Springfield.

Last year, Anderson qualified for state as a freshman but could not compete because of a serious knee injury.

"It was great for Kim to finally beat Megan, who is a really tough player," said Jackson coach Linda Adams. "And I'm so happy for Kim, and so proud of her. She couldn't play at state last year. She was so happy."

Jackson's other singles player, Nicole Poythress, finished fourth in the district after suffering a 9-7 loss to Oakville's No. 1 player.

"Nicole really played well," Adams said. "She has really come on this year."

In the doubles final, a team from Poplar Bluff beat a squad from Oakville as both teams qualified for state.

Poplar Bluff finished third in the team standings with 16 points while Farmington was fourth with 10 1/2. Cape Central and Rockwood Summit both scored 2 1/2 points, followed by Eureka and Lindbergh with two apiece. Mehlville failed to score.

Jackson's doubles team of Maggie Martin and Carly Vogelsang won two matches before being eliminated while the Lady Indians' other doubles squad of Sarah Propst and Katie Domian won one match.

Cape Central only had one victory, that coming from the doubles team of Allison Campbell and Megan Ladd.
