The Charleston boys basketball team got it going early and the Jackson Indians never got untracked in a SEMO Conference matchup Tuesday at Charleston, Mo.
Charleston (15-5) played a near-perfect first quarter on both ends of the court to set up a 64-46 thumping of the Indians.
When the dust settled after the first period, the Indians found themselves in a 20-6 hole, one from which they never recovered.
"We didn't match their intensity and never really battled hard," said Jackson coach Darrin Scott. "I don't know if we backed down, but we let their quickness bother us."
Jackson (16-5) trailed 39-14 at the half, 51-26 after the third quarter.
Asked how much the absence of starters Drue McNeely and Jake Leet, both sidelined with injury, affected his ballclub, Scott responded, "That set us back some, but that's beside the point, we've got to go forward with the guys we've got and figure out how to take care of [the basketball] and get the ball into the post. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that we need to get the ball inside."
Jackson's frontline of 6-foot-10 Aaron Redecker, 6-5 Spencer Goodman and 6-6 Hunter Grantham was held to a combined 20 points. Ryan Leet was the lone Indians player in double figures with 14 points.

Jackson suffered its first dual meet loss of the season, losing on the third tiebreaker in a match at home.
The match ended in a 31-31 tie and the teams had an identical number of pins (three) and wins (seven). But Jackson had been penalized with a point for stalling in one match, and that penalty point doomed the Indians.
Jackson had topped Farmington in the SEMO Conference tournament last week.
"We knew they matched up good with our team," Jackson coach Steve Wachter said. "I felt they really outwrestled us. It was close, but they did deserve it."
Wachter thought the close match may benefit his team during the state playoffs.
"We need that pressure," he said, "and we need to learn to respond to that pressure as a team. And we really didn't do that tonight."
