JACKSON -- Austin Peay's Scott Niewland and John Swigart were among three golfers to shoot opening-round 69's in the 1997 Drury Intercollegiate Monday as the Governors jumped out to an eight-shot lead.

The Governors, who shot a 283 team total, and Murray State, 291, were the only two teams in the 15-team field to shoot below 300 on the par-72 Bent Creek layout.

Boyd Mickle added a 71 for Austin Peay as the Govs accounted for three of the day's six sub-par rounds.

J.R. Conkle paced Murray State with a 69 while teammate Adam Grogan was just a stroke back at 70.

Southeast Missouri's `White' squad stood third at 300, followed by Southwest Missouri (301), Creighton (304), Morehead State (304), Southern Illinois (304), DePaul (308), UMKC (309), Belmont (310), New Orleans (310), Evansville (312), Tennessee State (313), Eastern Illinois (316) and Southeast Missouri `Red' (316).

Ryan Jaques and Jason Owen led Southeast `White' with 73's. Shawn Edgar added a 75, Derek Rahlmann a 79 and Jake Saladin an 81.

For Southeast `Red', Mike Brown and Scott Roe carded 77's, Matt Clabaugh shot 78 and John Sutton finished at 84.

Play concludes with today's second round.
