Roger Clemens and Greg Swindell each pitched a scoreless inning for the Alumni team in a 3-0 loss to the Texas varsity Saturday. Clemens, the six-time AL Cy Young winner, struck out one in the top of the first inning. The New York Yankees star was relieved by Swindell, who worked the next inning. Swindell stayed in the game after he finished pitching, with the Arizona Diamondbacks lefty also playing the outfield and first base.

Lou Pote, who pitched last season for the Anaheim Angels, joined the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Central League on Saturday.

The Houston Astros traded outfielder Daryle Ward to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, clearing room for Craig Biggio to move from second base to center field.

Basketball

Hornets guard Baron Davis will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. Davis injured the knee during the third quarter of Friday night's 97-96 overtime loss to Portland. The team said it wouldn't know how long Davis will be out until Monday.

Toronto Raptors guard Lindsey Hunter is expected to be sidelined up to 10 days because of a sore lower back. Hunter is averaging 9.7 points and 2.4 assists in 29 games. The Raptors also announced Saturday that forward Michael Bradley will return today after missing 11 games with a disc injury to his lower back. Bradley averaged 3.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 32 games.

Colleges

Cincinnati's Jonathan Ruffin kicked a Gridiron Classic-record 49-yard field goal with 13 seconds left Saturday to give Team USA a 20-17 win over Team Florida. Ruffin, who was chosen the game's most valuable player, beat the old mark of 39 yards was set by West Virginia's Jay Taylor in 2000. The kick matched his career best, set in a close loss to Ohio State on Sept. 21.

Utah coach Rick Majerus missed Saturday's game at Brigham Young to attend the funeral of the stepfather of former All-America Andre Miller. Majerus said in a statement that he felt obligated when Albert Robinson's family asked him to speak at the funeral Saturday morning in Los Angeles.

The Miami of Ohio coach charged with knocking down a Marshall fan after a game last season has resigned, the school said Saturday. Defensive coordinator Jon Wauford pleaded innocent last month in a Huntington, W.Va., court to a misdemeanor battery charge that he knocked down the fan after Marshall's last-second, 36-34 win over Miami on Nov. 12. Wauford, 32, said in his resignation letter that the negative publicity the incident brought to Miami's football program was unfortunate.

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer got a one-year contract extension that did not include a pay raise after disappointing season. Fulmer's contract, which pays $1.65 million a year, will carry through Dec. 31, 2009.

Wake Forest signed football coach Jim Grobe to a 10-year contract extension after leading the Demon Deacons to consecutive winning seasons.

Marcus Allen was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. The former Oakland Raiders running back was chosen for the Class of 2003 in his first year of eligibility. He will be joined by Elvin Bethea, Joe DeLamielleure, James Lofton and Hank Stram. Enshrinement of the class of 2003 is scheduled for Aug. 3 at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Golf

Harrison Frazar separated himself from his challengers with a birdie on the 17th hole Saturday, and took a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Phoenix Open. The 31-year-old Texan finished with a 4-under 67 for a 54-hole score of 17-under 196. John Huston (66) and Tim Petrovic (68), Frazar's co-leader at the midpoint, were at 197.

South Africa's Ernie Els shot a 2-under 70 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Singapore Masters. Els held a five-shot lead midway through the third round before bogeys at Nos. 17 and 18 at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

Lee Trevino won the Champions Skins Game, holing a 10-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to finish with six skins and $240,000.

At age 46, Martina Navratilova is a Grand Slam champion again. Navratilova served out the match, teaming with India's Leander Paes to beat Todd Woodbridge and Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 7-5 Saturday for the Australian Open mixed doubles championship. It was her first mixed title in the Australian.
