Best wishes

TO FORMER Scott County Central basketball coach David Heeb: I wish you luck as you go on to the college ranks. It's a shame Scott County Central didn't give you a second chance. Hopefully, one day my kids can play ball for you.

The real king

I AM always going to consider Hank Aaron the home-run king. Barry Bonds -- I have no respect for the man whatsoever, but Hank Aaron is the man.

Entertaining ball

LAST WEEKEND brought an end to another fantastic summer of great amateur baseball by the American Legion teams in District 14. The zone tournament in Jackson included teams from Jackson and Dunklin County from District 14, and three teams from the St. Louis area. It is a shame more people didn't attend this tournament, since seven of the nine games come down to the final at-bat, and the final three games of the tournament ended in extra innings. Thanks to all the American Legion posts who support this fantastic league and too all the young men and coaches who participate in this organization.

Hall update

LAST SPRING, a Central High School spokesperson announced the school would again accept nominations for its Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominations were solicited. I am aware that a number have been made. I would like to know what the process of selection will be and when and where new inductions will occur.

(The number of nominations was three, said Central athletic director Mark Ruark, who said the committee also now will look into past nominations in addition to accepting more new ones. Details on the time, date and place for the announcement of the class will be released when it is available, Ruark said.)
