ELLSINORE, Mo. — East Prairie put on a show-stopping performance, crushing East Carter with a final score of 14-1 on Monday, May 1.
Peyton Hodges was the star of the game for the Eagles (13-10), earning the win on the mound after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing one earned run, one hit and striking out 12 batters.
“I thought [Hodges] settled down after the first inning and pitched a fantastic game,” said East Prairie coach Gary Scott. “He also helped himself by hitting his first career high school home run. It was a great day for him.”
Hodges’ two-run bomb came in the top of the seventh inning and extended East Prairie’s lead to 12-1.
“I was really happy with how the game went,” Hodges said. “We took advantage of some walks at some key points during the game. I was most happy with how we continued to put pressure on and eventually swing the momentum our way late in the game. It felt great as I’ve always wanted to hit one out and I found my pitch and did my best to hit it hard.
In addition to being one of the top pitchers in the area, Hodges’ batting average has significantly from last season. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, a stolen base and three runs. Hodges is hitting with more power and consistency, indicating he’s worked hard on to improve his skills.
Ty Wallace also had a standout game, finishing 2-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and three runs.
“We are playing better as of late,” Scott concluded. “We are starting to put the ball in play more and get some key hits to score some runs. Hopefully, we continue to stay hot going into the District Tournament.”
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, May 2. East Prairie hosts Bernie (10-9), while East Carter (11-13) hosts Doniphan (10-8).
