Delta's girls took advantage of a Kelly foul-fest and posted a 50-37 home victory in the season opener for both teams.

Delta scored 17 points from the free-throw line, and got 16 points from Sarah M. Cook. Rebecca Cook and Rebecca Below added 15 each.

Below was big on the boards as well, pulling down 10. Freshman Becky Rozmirsky also gave Delta a lift, picking up five rebounds off the bench.

Kelly Essner paced the Hawks with 13 points and Dana Essner added 12. The Hawks were hurt by hitting just nine of 21 free-throw attempts, compared to 17 for 26 for Delta.

Scott City 70, Portageville 51

Scott City got a big performance from Loren Groves and cruised past Portageville on the road in the Rams' season opener.

Besides Groves' 25 points, Rachel Spinks added 22 and Jenny Pinkston had 12.

New Salem 55, Peoples Christian 41

Sarah Green scored 20 points while Laura Poole and Whitney Woods had 10 each to lead New Salem Baptist Academy of Marble Hill to a home victory.

BOYS BASKETBALL

East Prairie 55, Oak Ridge 41

East Prairie used a strong first and fourth quarters to slide past host Oak Ridge.

East Prairie was led by Matt Boyer's 18 points. Zach Ruesler paced Oak Ridge with 19.

Oak Ridge JV lost 48-43.

New Salem 71, People Christian 65

Andy Yount scored 19 points, Johnathan Davault had 18 and David Green and Josiah Davault added 10 each as New Salem Baptist Academy of Marble Hill posted a home victory.

In the Notre Dame JV Tournament, Jackson was the lone local squad to make it out of the first round with a win.

First round scores were Jackson 53, Blytheville (Ark.) 30; Poplar Bluff 71, Charleston 44; Farmington 51, Notre Dame 44; and Sikeston 47, Central 43.

Semifinals will be Wednesday.

Central tournament

Host Central split its two games in the opening round of the junior varsity tournament Monday.

Central's A team (1-0) defeated New Madrid County Central (0-1) 29-23 for its first victory of the season. Lee Thomas scored ten for Central. Lauren Loftis had seven and Megan Richards added six.

Poplar Bluff (1-0) defeated Farmington (0-1) handily 46-19.

Central's B team (1-0) lost to Notre Dame (1-0) 50-15. Amber Karnes scored 13 for the Bulldogs. Meg Yates scored nine in a losing effort.

Jackson (1-0) routed Sikeston (0-1) 58-16.

In the semifinals today, Central's A team will play Jackson and Sikeston will take on New Madrid at 6 p.m. Farmington plays Notre Dame and Poplar Bluff will play Central's B team at 7:30 p.m.

Freshmen boys' basketball

Sikeston 42, Central 39

Central's freshmen lost their season opener on a last second three-pointer by host Sikeston.

Anthony Hempstead and Jared Thomas led the way for Central with 13 points apiece.

Eighth grade boys' basketball

Sikeston 44, Central 28

Sikeston handed Central's eighth grade a season-opening road loss.

Kerry Walker led Central with 12 points.
