The softball teams from Scott City and Delta got more than they bargained for in Wednesday's sweltering heat.
The squads needed five extra innings to decide things, with visiting Delta scoring four times in the top of the 12th to squeeze out a 6-2 victory in its season opener.
"It was a good game until the last inning," said Scott City coach Sally O'Brien, whose Rams are 1-1.
Delta broke a 2-2 tie in the 12th without the benefit of a hit as the Bobcats took advantage of four walks and two errors.
That uprising broke up an impressive pitchers' duel as both starters went the distance.
Delta's Kendra Burnett allowed six hits. She struck out seven and walked two.
Scott City's Emily Essner scattered 11 hits, while striking out eight and walking eight.
Burnett, Courtney Burton and Taylor Keys all had two hits for the Bobcats. Chelsi Bradley paced the Rams with two hits.
Delta took the lead first by scoring twice in the sixth, but Scott City rallied with two runs in the seventh to force extra innings.
