Cink takes control of NEC event

Stewart Cink seized control of the NEC Invitational in Akron, Ohio, with six straight one-putt greens and a chip-in from 50 feet for birdie on the 18th hole Saturday for a 2-under 68, giving him a five-shot lead over a trio of Ryder Cup teammates.

"I didn't expect anything like that to happen," Cink said. "I thought, 'That's pretty cool.' That chip-in just got me a five-shot lead."

Chris DiMarco, who played his way onto his first Ryder Cup team last week at the PGA Championship, had a 67 and will play in the final group with Cink on Sunday.

As Tiger Woods and David Toms lost ground over the closing holes at Firestone South, Cink finished at 11-under 199.

It was the largest 54-hole lead at this World Golf Championship event since Woods led by nine shots in 2000.

Woods struggled off the tee and badly pulled his drive on the 18th beyond the trees and needed a great escape to save par for a 70.

"I hit it so great this morning it was scary," Woods said, who made three straight birdies to finish his second round in the rain-delayed tournament. "Then all of a sudden, I come out here and play like an idiot. I know it's in there. It's just a matter of bringing it out."

Toms ended his round with a double bogey for the second time this week, and this one was costly. He was two shots out of the lead but fell to five back.

Rory Sabbatini wound up with a 71 and joined Scott Verplank (67) and Rod Pampling (70) at 205.

Hee-Won Han leads LPGAHee-Won Han was back atop the leaderboard at the Wendy's Championship for Children in Dublin, Ohio.

Han, the defending champion and 2002 runner-up, shot an even-par 72 in the third round to take a two-shot lead.

The third round was suspended due to darkness with 18 players still on the course.

Moore into U.S. Am finalRyan Moore moved into position to try for his fourth amateur title of the year, beating Jeff Overton 2 and 1 in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Moore, a UNLV senior who has already won the NCAA Division I, U.S. Amateur Public Links and Western Amateur titles, will face Luke List in today's 36-hole final.

Roland Thatcher shot a 68 Saturday to join Vaughn Taylor (69) at 13-under after three rounds. Steve Allan and Hunter Mahan each shot 68s and were 12-under. Bill Haas moved into fifth at 10-under with a 67.
