Cape Central and Notre Dame's soccer teams both posted easy shutout victories in the Notre Dame Soccerfest Wednesday.
Cape Central recorded its second shutout of the season, making easy work of Sikeston and allowing the Bulldogs just six shots on goal.
Notre Dame, in its season opener, cruised past Farmington 10-0.
In Cape Central's game, Brett McNabb scored the first goal of the game on an assist from John Mark Thompson at the 28-minute mark.
The score remained at 1-0 at halftime, but 10 minutes into the second half, Chris Cole deposited a pass from Cody Hill for the Tigers' second goal. With eight minutes left, Whitt Lynn scored on an assist from Matt Davis.
"I was real pleased with the team play, the passing and the ball control," said Central coach Tom Doyle. "We're making good decisions, but we had a lot of opportunities where we didn't score."
For Notre Dame, Nathan LeGrand, Timmy Wencewicz and Tyler Cuba scored two goals apiece, while Nick Kapfer, Scott Wittenborn, Paul Unterreiner and Andy Arnzen scored one each. Wittenborn led the team with three assists.
"We graduated nine starters and we only have one senior and we didn't know what to expect," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "They were trying to trap and we got behind them more than they would've liked. We looked fairly quick tonight."
In other Soccerfest games, Carbondale, Ill. beat Hillsboro 2-0 and Poplar Bluff beat Jackson 3-0.
Jackson will play Farmington, and Sikeston will play Hillsboro at 4 p.m. today; Notre Dame will take on Poplar Bluff at 6 and Central will battle Carbondale at 8.
SOFTBALL
Kelly 2, Cape Central 0
Cape Central pitcher Holly Schnurbusch pitched a three-hit shutout through seven innings, but the Lady Tigers finally fell victim to Kelly in the eighth inning of a pitchers' duel.
Marissa Essner's game-winning hit in the eighth was the difference. Megan Beggs knocked in Essner for an insurance run. Kelly improved to 2-0.
Trisha Klipfel, Megan McDonald, Sarah Miinch, Amber Voerge and Jessica McDonald each had a hit for Central (5-3), but the Lady Tigers stranded seven on base and had a runner thrown out at the plate after she stumbled and fell down.
"We're not hitting the ball well right now," said Central coach Amy Blattel. "Our pitchers are doing a great job and defensively we're playing well. We just have to push runs across."

Schnurbusch allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five in the loss.
Kelly's junior varsity claimed at 4-3 win over Central (1-3).
