CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Medicap Pharmacy American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Friday night, 7-2 and 6-5.
Chaffee improved to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in District 14 play. Cape fell to 11-12 and 4-6.
Chaffee won the nightcap in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning on a game-winning gapper to right-center field by Brad Kolwyck, which scored Josh Eftink from second base.
Tommy Stidham led off the inning with a single and stole second. Eftink was later intentionally passed and Jason Glastetter singled, but Stidham was thrown out at the plate.
Cape starter Dustin Glastetter dominated the nightcap, throwing a no-hittter through five innings, but gave up four consecutive extra-base hits before being lifted in the sixth. Chaffee scored five in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Cape scored twice to tie the game.
Brian Obermann picked up the win for Chaffee in six innings. He gave up three runs (none earned) on seven hits. He fanned four and walked none.
Garrett Broshuis suffered the loss in relief.
Jason Glastetter and Kolwyck each had two hits for Chaffee, while Tommy Wencewicz had two and Mark Fisher had four for Cape.
Dustin Dannenmueller earned the win in the opener, going all seven innings and giving up six hits and three walks, while striking out two.
Eftink hit a two-run, opposite field homer, while Kolwyck and Stidham each recorded two hits apiece.
Wes Steele and Josh McIntosh each had two hits for Cape.
Steve Fowler suffered the loss. He fanned seven and walked one, while giving up eight hits. Only four of the runs were earned.
"We battled hard," said Cape manager Ron Michel. "Chaffee has a good team and we were right there with them. They were two hard-fought games."
Cape Jr. Legion sweeps
JACKSON -- The Cape Wood & Huston Bank Junior American Legion team swept host Jackson, winning 8-1 and 8-7.
Cape is now 18-8 overall and 10-4 in District 14 play.
Rob Carr got the win in the opener. He allowed seven hits while fanning six and walking three.
Zac Fidler and Tim Wencewicz both homered while Jeff Daniels, Dusty Barrows and Aaron DePeder all had two hits.
Wencewicz was the winner in the nightcap. Scott Eftink and John Snider each had two hits.
