Central's district title crown is its fourth in a row

Central's softball team captured its fourth straight Class 4, District 1 tournament title Monday after Shana Wadlington's bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning produced a 1-0 win over Hillsboro at Farmington.

Hillsboro starter Amanda Clack held the top-seeded Tigers without a hit through the first four innings and allowed only five hits in the game. It was Central's fourth hit, a leadoff single by Erica Schabbing in the bottom of the eighth, that caught up to Clack.

Schabbing reached second base on the single when Hillsboro's center fielder bobbled the ball. Susie Edwards followed with a sacrifice bunt, advancing Schabbing to third. Jamie Lester and Jami Dement both reached base on fielder's choices to load the bases. Wadlington followed with a single up the middle to score Schabbing and secure the win.

Central's Megan McDonald pitched all eight innings. She struck out 11, allowed two hits and walked none.

Central (18-7) will play the winner of the Oakville-St. Louis Notre Dame District 2 final in the sectional round at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson.

Kelly 5, St. Vincent 1

Kelly captured its third Class 2, District 1 tournament title in four years with a win at home.

The top-seeded Hawks (18-4) did not allow a hit in their two district games. In the final, Whitney Beggs pitched the first four innings and Kelly Essner pitched the final three.

Mindy Robert, Jessica Burnett and Ashley Rocket had two hits apiece for Kelly.

The Hawks will not have to go far with the sectionals scheduled for Wednesday at Kelly. Wednesday's game will be a rematch for Kelly, which faces Elsberry (17-5).

Naylor 3, Delta 0

Second-seeded Naylor upset No. 1 Delta in the finals of the Class 1, District 1 tournament at Thayer.

The Bobcats lost a district final for the first time since starting a fall softball program, a streak of five straight championships. Delta beat Naylor earlier in the season but managed only three hits Monday.

Delta starter Sarah Cook allowed one earned run and four hits. She struck out seven and walked none.

In the semifinals earlier in the day, the Bobcats beat Bakersfield 15-0 in three innings. Kacie Seabaugh had three hits and Jenny Dannenmueller added two.

VOLLEYBALL

Advance 21-25, Central 13-15

Advance won at home for its 20th victory this season.

Dana Williams had 12 kills for the Hornets, 20-6 and No. 4 in the SEMO Top 10. Nikki Kennedy had five digs and Leslie Rainey added eight assists.

Tasha Valleroy led Central (4-17-7) in assists with five. Chelsea Oliver and Stephanie Clark added five digs apiece. Advance's JV (13-7) won 25-19, 25-13.

Jackson 25-25, Fredericktown 19-15

Jackson swept the visiting Blackcats for its 18th win.

The Indians (18-8-1) were led by Linden Hahs, who had 10 digs. Laura Johnson added nine digs.

Jackson's JV won 25-12, 21-25, 25-16.

Leopold 25-25, Richland 12-18

Wendy Vandeven had 20 assists to lead Leopold at home.

The Wildcats (15-4) were led by Tasha Thele's 11 kills. Lori Vandermierden added seven and Amber Nenninger had six.

Thele led Leopold with six aces. Vandeven led the way with five blocks.

Leopold's JV (3-13) lost 25-14, 22-25, 22-25.

Scott City 19-25-25, Chaffee 25-14-18

Scott City won in three games on the road.

The Rams (15-8-2) got eight kills and 10 digs from Kacie Cartwright. Abbie Cook added five kills, and Amanda Raines had seven assists.

Scott City's JV won 25-15, 25-17.

OTHERS

Saxony Lutheran's JV defeatedPerryville's freshmen 17-25, 25-13, 25-18 and improved to 5-16.

Ty Craft had two touchdowns and Scott Brueckner threw for another as Central's JV (4-0)beat New Madrid County Central 24-6. Craft and Scott Dunaway each rushed for 60 yards. Daniel Martin led the defense with 10 tackles.
