Central girls top Raiders for 1st win in new gym

Central rebounded from a tough home loss to Mt. Vernon (Ill.) over the weekend to post their first win at their new home gym, a 74-33 victory over North County Monday night.

Alex Wieser led the Tigers with 29 points. Megan McDonald added 18 for the Tigers. Central (3-3) raced out to a 35-13 halftime lead and never looked back.

Central's junior varsity won 33-32.

Delta 74, Chaffee 31

Delta fought through a sickness plaguing the team to defeat Chaffee on the road.

Delta was led by Rebecca Below who had 37 points and 15 rebounds. Sarah Jo Cook netted a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with her seven points.

Jennifer Vandeven led Chaffee with 14 points.

Delta improved to 6-0 despite having four varsity members seeing limited playing time due to an 0illness.

"We had four varsity girls sick," said coach Randall White. "But they hung in there and played hard."

The Bobcats will play Charleston on Thursday night.

Jackson 82, Perryville 32

Jenna Leet paced Jackson to a road victory with 20 points.

Jackson (5-1) used a 27-point first quarter to set the tone. Whitney Werner added 12 points for Jackson, while Ashley Bartels contributed 11. Perryville was led by April Lorenz's 20 points.

Jackson JV won 48-33.

Kelly 56, East Prairie 26

Kelly (3-3) used a strong first quarter to ease by East Prairie.

Kelly Essner led the Hawks with 14 points. Ashley Kern added 10 for the Hawks.

Kelly JV won 43-20.

Woodland 67, Puxico 31

Woodland (2-2) climbed to .500 with an easy victory over visiting Puxico (0-2).

Elisha Glastetter had 20 points for the Cardinals. She was helped by Sasha Hutson and Kandice Abner who both added 14.

Scott County Central 73, Oran 38

Janet Penrod helped Scott County Central (4-1) control Oran with 26 points. Christina Valenzuela contributed 21 points to the cause for the Bravettes.

Oran was led by Erica Dirnberger's 15 points.

Scott City 42, Caruthersville 37

Scott City outscored Caruthersville by five points in the fourth quarter to pull out a win on the road.

Rachael Spinks led all scorers with 18 points for Scott City. Amanda Raines added nine and Jenny Pinkston dropped seven as Scott City (4-2) squeaked by.

Scott City's junior varsity (3-0) also won 29-24.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Puxico 71, Scott County Central 68

Puxico overcame a slow start to outlast Scott County Central at home.

Matt Fox paced Puxico with 21 points while Jeff Townsend added 10. Ryan Smith and Kyle Hale each had 10 for Puxico.

Dujuan Watkins, making his season-debut, led the Braves (2-3) with 24 points. Chris Pullen added 17 and Matt Hollman had 10.

BOYS' SWIMMING

Oakville 129, Central 114, Poplar Bluff 69

Central took second in the Oakville tri-meet on Monday.

The Tigers had four first-place finishes: Kris Metje won the 200-yard freestyle; Alex Heddle won the 100 breast stroke; David Hammond took first in diving; and the 400 freestyle relay team (Metje, Heddle, Sam Maguire, Andrew Moreton) also won.

Central's (1-3) next meet is Thursday against Notre Dame.

Wrestling

Jackson places ninth

Jackson finished ninth out of 14 teams over the weekend in the Missouri Duals in Jefferson City, a tournament that is rated the second-toughest in the state.

The Indians went 3-4 in dual matches. Wins were over Oakville 53-30, Raytown South 44-26 and Fort Zumwalt South 44-26. Losses were to Granite City (Ill.) 36-24, Ste. Genevieve 38-34, Neosho 36-35 and Jefferson City Helias 42-26.

Four Jackson wrestlers went 7-0 in the tournament: Brock Howard (125 pounds), Cody Rouse (140), Kramer Rampley (145) and Matt Kahle (189).

Ben McMillan (103) went 6-1 and Charlie Doerge (heavyweight) 5-2.

Raymore-Peculiar won the tournament, beating Granite City in the finals. Helias was third, Blue Springs fourth, Jefferson City fifth and Ste. Genevieve sixth.--From staff reports
