The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion team finished its regular season by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Farmington.

Ford & Sons (17-24) nearly overcame a five-run deficit but fell one run short and dropped the first game 9-8.

Tony Lueckel, Zac Hudson and Lee Essner each had two hits in the game. Essner had two RBIs, and Hudson had a double.

Mark Johnston allowed just two earned runs and scattered six hits in the second game, which Cape won 6-3.

Sean Bard had three hits, including a triple. Johnston also had a triple to go along with his complete game victory.

Ford & Sons tied Dunklin County for the best district record in the regular season and will be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the upcoming District 14 Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Jackson.

Yanks win Babe Ruth clash

The Cape Girardeau Babe Ruth Yankees scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and overcame a four-run deficit to beat Washington, Mo., 8-7 and advance to the championship game of the six-team district tournament.

Nathan Jones led the Yankees (9-19) with three hits, including a triple. Justin Meyers and Cory Kitchen each had two hits. Kitchen had a double and two runs scored.

Meyers pitched all seven innings to earn the win, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

The Yankees play Portageville 2 p.m. today in the championship.
