The Ohio Valley Conference has announced 51 student-athletes from 16 sports have been awarded the 1997-98 Ohio Valley Conference Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor is given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest grade-point average in a conference-sponsored sport.

Of the 51 student-athletes who earned a medal, 48 achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. Southeast Missouri State University, along with Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State, each had a league-high nine Medal of Honor winners.

All nine of Southeast's Medal of Honor winners had a perfect 4.0 GPA. The nine are:

Janelle Quigley and Celeste Ramsey (women's cross country and women's track); Adam Esterline (football); Christine Engelhardt and Kim Palmer (softball); Michelle Gruber (tennis); Rebecca Shull (women's track); Mandy Edgington and Cathy Prichard (volleyball).

Southeast also had 64 student-athletes earn Commissioners Honor Roll awards, which are given for a GPA of 3.23 or higher.
