Senior day is always a special one for everyone involved.
On Saturday, the Notre Dame Bulldogs honored Avery Wagoner who has been with the program for four years.
“I was a little nervous but mostly excited,” Wagoner said. “We got some great weather and I was ready to finish out my softball career here at Notre Dame.”
To go along with the great weather, the Bulldogs played well in game one of the double header against Incarnate Word Academy, defeating the Red Knights 6-3.
Wagoner also made the most of her celebration, going 2-for-4 with a RBI in the win.
Wagoner said she still remembers her first practice as a freshman.
“I remember being so nervous,” Wagoner said. “To think it’s already ending is crazy but it’s been a great journey.”
As a leader, Wagoner hopes the younger girls on the roster cherish every moment they have on the field.
“We start a lot of underclasmen,” Wagoner said. “I think they maybe take some of those moments for granted so I try to remind them not to and to just play every play like it’s your last.”
Wagoner said being apart of the program for four years has meant a lot to her.
“It’s just meant so much to me,” Wagoner said. “I’ve been here since I was a freshman and it’s been a constant throughout my life. Notre Dame has made it something I will never forget.”
Following graduation in May, Wagoner’s softball career will end and she will be attending Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
“It’s going to be really weird,” Wagoner said. “I’ve spent every August through October here at the softball field so it’s going to be weird but I plan on coming back and watching some games because I’ve always loved softball.”
Next up for the Bulldogs is Class 4 District 1 play where they will open play against DeSoto at 5 p.m. in Farmington.
Wagoner is hopeful the Bulldogs’ bats are peaking at the right time.
“I was a little worried in the middle of the season because all of our bats were lagging at the same time,” Wagoner said. “We’re all picking up at the same time though so I’m ready for districts. It’s going to be exciting.”
