Three-day soccer referee clinic set for February

An entry level soccer referee clinic will be offered in mid-February with three local associations sponsoring the three-day class.

The Cape Area Youth Soccer Association, the Jackson Area Optimist Soccer Association and the Southeast Missouri Soccer Referees Association are teaming up to put on the event.

Classes will be 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 17, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 18 and 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 19. River Eagle Distributing, at 2346 Rust Ave. in Cape Girardeau, will be the site.

The cost is $20 for the class. Also, a $25 fee is required to register for the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Participants must be at least 14 years of age.

Stewart will return for luncheon on Tuesday

Former KFVS sportscaster and current Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Steve Stewart will be the guest speaker Tuesday at the Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals Luncheon.

The luncheon is scheduled for noon at Port Cape Girardeau restaurant.

Stewart worked weekends for KFVS and was a fill-in on Cardinals broadcasts in 2002 before succeeding Joe Nuxhall in the Reds radio booth in 2004.

Stewart will talk about his rise to the major leagues.

Heartland gymnasts place in recent meets

Cassie Hindman led Heartland Gymnastics' Level 5 team at the St. Louis Classic with a third-place finish in the all-around.

The event took place Jan. 8 at America's Center in downtown St. Louis.

Hindman, 11, was first on the bars (9.10) and second in the floor exercise (9.325).

Alyssa Garner, 9, placed sixth all-around. She was first on the bars (9.35) and first on the floor (9.475).

Alexia Phillips, 10, placed 11th in the all-around and seventh on the floor; Karsen Powers, 9, was 11th in the all-around; and Hannah Litwicki, 11, was fourth on the floor, fifth on the balance beam and fifth in the vault.

At the Jan. 14 meet in Farmington, Heartland had first-place all-around finishes from: Phillips, 11, Level 5; Macie Borgfield, 7, Level 3; Sierra Jones, 9, Level 3; Alyssa Kimmich, 8, Level 3; Brylee Morse, 6, Level 2; and Olivia Williams, 6 and under, Level 2.
