Southeast adds another football recruit
The Southeast Missouri State football team added another recruit for this season.
Daryl Gist, a wide receiver who played at Mesa Community College in San Diego, Calif., will be a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining.
Gist, a 6-foot-5, 215-pounder, was second-team all-conference in 2006 after catching 18 passes for 285 yards.
As a freshman, the San Diego native finished seventh in his junior college conference in kickoff return yards.
Southeast baseball signs two players
Southeast baseball coach Mark Hogan announced the recent signings of former Three Rivers Community College pitcher Ryan Poole and outfielder Tyrell Cummings from Seminole State (Okla.) Community College.
Poole sat out the 2007 season as a redshirt at TRCC. As a freshman, he was 6-3 with 37 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings. He currently pitches for the Sikeston Bulls.
"We are pleased to have Ryan join our club. He is a great kid with a great upside and we feel confident about his chances to be a big winner for us," Hogan said in a release.
Cummings batted .351 with eight homers, 20 doubles and 49 RBIs this year.
"Tyrell is a big-time impact player and will make an immediate impact in the middle of our lineup and defensively in 2008," Hogan said in the release. "He had an outstanding junior college career and is a quality person as well."
Caudle captures first in trophy class
Oran's Mitch Caudle won the trophy class at the Sikeston Drag Strip on Saturday.
Caudle beat Kyle Allardin of Bandana, Ky.
Caudle reached 61.14 mph. He had a dial-in time of 11.20 seconds and an elapsed time of 11.330. He had a reaction time of .538 in his victory.
Cape Legion junior team wins in tourney
The Cape Girardeau Plaza Tire American Legion junior baseball team beat top-seeded Jackson 19-8 on Wednesday in the District 14 tournament in Jackson.
Cape banged out 16 hits, led by Blake Smith, Ryan Grigaitis and Trent St. Cin with three each. Josh Compas and Wesley Glaus both had two hits. Glaus delivered four RBIs. Tanner Hiett was the winning pitcher.
Cape, 2-0 in the tournament, plays Dunklin County at 5 p.m. today in the winners bracket final.
Cape Senior Babe Ruth splits twin bill
The Cape Girardeau Senior Babe Ruth baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Portageville on Tuesday night, losing the opener 5-2 and winning the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings.
Cape (12-7) plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with one out when Justin Myers singled, Abe Dirnberger doubled and Myers scored on Dustin LeGrand's sacrifice fly.
Dirnberger tripled and doubled for two of Cape's five hits. Brett Heischmidt pitched five innings of one-run, two-hit relief for the victory.
Cape also had five hits in the opener as Nick Ostendorf took the loss.
Myers wins fourth straight feature
Cline Myers of Scott City won the pure street division at the Benton Auto Tire and Parts Racepark on Friday. It was his fourth straight feature victory.
Other winners were Troy Naeger (sportsman class), Jeff Hall Jr. (modifieds), Randy Kuehn (cruisers) and Tommy Worley (sprints).
