ANNA, Ill. -- Anna-Jonesboro scored all six of its runs in the third inning and that was enough to hold off Chaffee in a 6-4 victory over the Red Devils Thursday in high school baseball action.

Anna-Jonesboro (15-2) roughed up Chaffee ace Matt Stroup for six earned runs, three of which came on a home run.

Stroup went five innings and allowed seven hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

"He wasn't real sharp today," said Chaffee coach Brian Horrell. "But take away the one bad inning and they didn't pose a threat at any other time in the ballgame. I heard good things about Anna-Jonesboro and they can flat out play baseball. Stroup is a quality pitcher. He just had one bad inning and other than that he did a good job."

Chaffee (12-4) built a 3-0 lead after scoring one in the first and two in the second. The Red Devils added one more in the fourth.

Stroup didn't take his pitching troubles to the plate as he got three of Chaffee's seven hits.

Perry Rice went 2-for-4 for Chaffee.

Chaffee had plenty of opportunities to score, Horrell said, but "I felt we struck out entirely too much, especially in crucial situations."

S. Pemiscot 10, Kelly 2

BENTON -- South Pemiscot's Justin Depriest hit for the cycle as the Bulldogs remained undefeated, improving to 11-0.

Kelly, which fell to 6-6, stranded the bases loaded in the first, second and fourth innings and left 12 runners on base for the game.

"We had a lot of opportunities," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "We had some hard hit balls hit right at people. We just didn't get the hits to keep us in the game. But they're a good-fielding team and executed."

Depriest tripled in a two-run first and homered in a four-run second as South Pemiscot built a 6-0 lead.

Jamie Essner gave up 11 hits in five innings and suffered the loss. He struck out four and walked two.

Essner had three of Kelly's 12 hits. Tim Schmitt, Drew Moore and Tyler Schlosser all had a pair of hits. Schmitt had a double among his hits.

GIRLS SOCCER

Perryville 2, Cape Central 0

The third time was a charm for the Perryville Lady Pirates.

After dropping two games to Cape Central (10-4-1) this year including a 1-0 defeat to the Lady Tigers this past Saturday in the third-place game of the Fralish Cup in Carbondale Perryville (11-3-2) returned the favor.

"It's hard to beat a good team three times," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "They have a bit more team speed than us and I felt they outworked us tonight."

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime, but at the 65-minute mark Stacy Baer provided the only goal Perryville would need from Jenna Schueffler. Baer, just two minutes later, added an insurance goal on an assist from Brooke Winkler.

Perryville's junior varsity team won 3-1.

Jackson 2, Poplar Bluff 0

POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson got two unassisted goals from Dana Wright as the Lady Indians improved to 10-4-2 on the season.

Wright scored her first goal at about the 9-minute mark of the game and didn't get the second until late in the second half.

"We were in their end and we had a lot of shots," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "We played well and kept the ball on the ground which we had to do because it was so windy."

Goalkeeper Whitney Werner recorded the shutout.

St. Vincent 2, De Soto 0

BOYS TENNIS

Cape Central 7, Carbondale 2

Cape Central improved to 7-4 on the season Thursday with a home victory over Carbondale.

The junior varsity, meanwhile, improved to 10-1 with a 2-0 win.
